Basketball

Brookline High School offers three levels of both boys' and girls' basketball. Players are expected to attend all games and practices.

We understand that circumstances occasionally arise and reasonable accommodations may be necessary. We ask that players communicate any conflicts as early as possible and understand that even an excused absence may sometimes result in disciplinary action. An absence from a game or practice without prior notice (except in emergencies) may result in sanctions, including suspension from future games. A second violation may result in removal from the program. An authorized absence from school due to illness counts as prior notice.

For players and families who are new to the program, personal commitments should be scheduled outside of team activities whenever possible. During the season, basketball is expected to take priority over other sports and extracurricular activities.

Academic responsibilities are also important. Many members of our coaching staff are educators and understand the role athletics play in a student's overall school experience. We believe that students who manage their academic responsibilities effectively will rarely encounter conflicts between schoolwork and basketball. As always, early communication is encouraged if conflicts arise.

The Brookline High School Basketball Program takes participation during December and February school breaks very seriously. We strive to be respectful of family commitments and special events during vacation periods, but competition during and immediately following these breaks is a regular part of the season.

Expectations differ between the varsity and sub-varsity levels.

For the Junior Varsity and Freshman teams, the season typically concludes before February vacation. Games and practices are scheduled during December break, but players may be absent for family holiday commitments without penalty. We simply ask that families notify coaches as far in advance as possible.

For the Varsity team, the regular season often concludes around February vacation, but postseason play may extend beyond that date. Varsity players should expect practices during February break and games and practices during December break.

Accepting a position on the Varsity team includes a commitment to these dates. Reasonable requests to miss a vacation practice, such as visiting out-of-state family members during the holidays, may be considered if communicated well in advance. However, extended vacation plans that conflict with postseason commitments, such as a family cruise or ski trip during February break, will generally not be approved. Attendance at games is mandatory.
