What Is Unified Sports?

Unified Sports brings together students with and without developmental disabilities to play on the same team and compete for their school against other schools in the league and region.

The Unified Sports movement is built on the belief that, through sports and teamwork, students can see one another for what they can do, not what they cannot do.

Unified Basketball

The fall season begins in mid-September and runs through mid-November.

Practices are typically held from 3:00–4:30 p.m. three days per week in Tappan Gym 1. Once games begin, games are usually held once per week in place of a practice.

Program Guidelines

Interscholastic Unified Sports is a school athletics program supported by Special Olympics and state high school athletic associations.

Quality Unified Sports programs follow these guidelines:

  • Teams are administered and supported in a similar way to other interscholastic sports teams.
  • Teams include approximately equal numbers of students with and without developmental disabilities.
  • Teammates and coaches follow official Unified Sports rules, applicable state association rules, and training standards before competition.
  • Coaches follow Unified Sports team composition guidelines to help minimize risk and support meaningful participation.
  • Programs provide genuine competition experiences in addition to participation opportunities.
  • All teammates are meaningfully involved in training and competitions and have opportunities to contribute.
  • Teams compete against other interscholastic Unified Sports school teams using a consistent set of official Unified Sports rules.

Special Olympics Mission Statement

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with developmental disabilities. The program gives athletes ongoing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and share gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other athletes, and the community.
