Hall of Fame

History

The Brookline High School Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1992 after Athletic Director Walter Sargent, Coach and Physical Education Director Ron DiVincenzo, and BHS graduates Gerry Varnum, Jack Heavey, Jim Hennessey, Owen Carle, and Shirley McDonald met to discuss creating a way to honor outstanding contributors to Brookline High School athletics.

The committee established three categories for Hall of Fame consideration:

  • BHS Student-Athletes: Former student-athletes who excelled on the playing field and have been out of high school for at least five years.
  • Coaches: Coaches with an outstanding coaching career of at least 10 years at Brookline High School.
  • Warrior Award: A non-athlete or coach who made outstanding contributions to the athletic program through donations, service, or community work. Recipients do not need to be BHS graduates.

The first Hall of Fame class was presented the following May during the first annual Varsity Awards Banquet at Boston University. Inductees received plaques from Brookline School Superintendent James Walsh, who read each biography before inviting inductees to speak.

More than 20 years later, nearly 100 of Brookline High School’s greatest athletes, coaches, and supporters have been honored through induction into the Hall of Fame.
