Our Program
Placement into ELE classes is determined through a WIDA Screener assessment done at the time of enrollment in PSB. The program includes four levels of coursework:
- ELE I: Beginner English
- ELE II: Intermediate English
- ELE III: Advanced English
- Transitional English *This is an inter-departmental (EL/EN) offering designed for both students who have already taken ELE III in the English Language Program and students who have recently exited the EL Program and may need additional support as they prepare for entry into grade-level English courses.
Coursework at each level emphasizes listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students must register for the full-year courses assigned to their designated level.
EL level 1 and 2 students take Listening/Speaking and Reading Writing courses, which offer credits in World Language and English.
EL III and IV students take only 1 English-credit course in the English Language Program and may opt to take a World Language in another language besides English.
Students enrolled in ELE courses may not register for English Department courses without permission from the BHS ELE staff.
Students in the ELE Program are also supported by Katy Frost Ouellette, International Student Advisor.
