Expectations for Student Performance

I. Content Knowledge and Understanding

Brookline High School students:

  • Develop the skills and knowledge described in BHS course syllabi.
  • Develop the skills and knowledge needed to succeed on a variety of mandated internal and external assessments.
  • Meet graduation requirements as defined by the Brookline School Committee.

II. Cognitive Powers and Critical Thinking

Brookline High School students:

  • Analyze, synthesize, and draw reasonable conclusions.

III. Communication

Brookline High School students:

  • Develop skills to communicate clearly and persuasively through writing, speaking, technology, and the arts.
  • Develop skills in listening and reading.

IV. Citizenship and Social Values

Brookline High School students:

  • Adhere to community standards as defined by the Code of Conduct in the BHS Handbook.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in collaborating and negotiating with individuals of varied backgrounds.
  • Behave in a respectful and ethical manner.
  • Demonstrate understanding of multiple perspectives and respect for human differences.

V. Life Skills

Brookline High School students:

  • Develop organizational and time management skills.
  • Set goals and work to achieve them.

The BHS Course Catalog represents the menu of course and program offerings and constitutes one of the most comprehensive educational programs offered at any high school. There are hundreds of courses in traditional academic disciplines and elective programs. Courses are available at different levels of intellectual challenge, including Advanced Placement programs in 18 subjects.

In addition, Brookline High School offers four alternative programs:

  • School-Within-A-School (SWS)
  • Alternative Choices in Education (ACE)
  • ExCEL
  • Winthrop House

These programs help Brookline High School address the needs of all students.

Students are encouraged to choose the most appropriate and challenging program for their interests and goals. Families should review the catalog carefully and discuss course selections with teachers, counselors, and parents or guardians to make informed decisions.

Brookline High School uses an eight-block schedule and encourages students to enroll in at least six courses while meeting graduation requirements. Course selections made during the spring help determine staffing and class sizes for the upcoming school year. Students and families are encouraged to select courses thoughtfully and commit carefully to their chosen schedule.
